COMMERCE - Residents living along Bonham Street in Commerce can expect more signage in their neighborhood, and perhaps future funding for area improvements.
The City Council on Tuesday approved a motion authorizing the Bonham Street Historical District to erect signs, which the organization hopes will further recognize the neighborhood’s historical significance and ultimately promote tourism for the city, specifically Bonham Street.
Bonham Street is part of the 160 acres granted by Sam Houston, then Governor of Texas, to William Jernigin in 1860. His son Jeff would inherit the northeast quadrant on which Bonham Street is located. What is believed to be the oldest home in Commerce sits at 1312 Bonham Street, and several notable families and citizens have lived in homes along the roadway since its inception.
Future projects planned by the Bonham Street Historical District include obtaining additional street lights, having the street re-paved, plus new sidewalks installed.
