Multiple agencies to feel impact of Morningstar closing

SULPHUR SPRINGS - Like most major employers, a company downsizing not only means a loss in jobs but a major hit to the local property tax roll.

Last Thursday, Morningstar Cultured Specialties plant in Sulphur Springs announced they will close down the facility by May 24, resulting in the loss of 55 jobs.

A report finds the business property was appraised at about $3.2 million. That means a negative impact of about $18,000 for the county, about $6,800 for the hospital, about $14,000 for the city and about $44,000 for the Sulphur Springs ISD.

Morningstar also operates a larger extended-shelf-life plant located at 300 E. Industrial Blvd in Sulphur Springs, which is not affected by this change. The company noted in a release that working in a highly competitive marketplace means their business must run “in the most efficient way possible.”
