COMMERCE - Projects for arts students at Texas A&M University-Commerce just got a little easier, following receipt of $40,000 in donated lenses and camera equipment from Canon U.S.A., Inc. The equipment will be available to students to checkout for projects.

Canon is providing onsite training for the equipment and is planning to use the new art output digital center as a venue to hold other events on campus. According to Canon, the new digital center is one of the 10 best in the country for university fine art output facilities with six printers, each with twelve color archival printing which will allow students to produce digital prints much larger than most other universities.

Bobby Malish, senior professional products specialist in the professional products engineering and solutions division at Canon U.S.A., Inc., has been involved with projects with the university for about 25 years.

He believes in creating a strategic alliance in terms of helping a university that helps students learn how things are really done in the market place.

“As the department is growing, changing and expanding this is a good opportunity to expose students to the industry’s best products, so they can know what they can be looking forward to when you get out of school. Canon wants students to learn with the right equipment,” Malish said. “When schools have good alliances with industry, they can learn about what’s going on in the real world instead of a textbook.”

Malish realized after he graduated the difference in real-world experience and knows why it is important to help give those experiences to students before they leave the university.

“When you get to a place in life where you can look back and understand more, you try to give back in any way we can,” Malish said. “I want to make sure students are successful. Through your education if you are well-trained, you will have a better future. Teaching technology is painfully expensive, and to alleviate some of that financial burden, Canon gives to make life better for students.”
