Construction of Veterans Memorial takes another major step

PARIS - Pavers engraved with the names of Texas military heroes have arrived and about ready for installation at the Red River Valley Veterans Memorial in Paris.

Officials will soon take bids on the project.

The Paris News reports that the 600 pavers received this week are the first of more than 700 sold. A large portion of those pavers came from the money collected by local elementary school students during last year’s Pennies for Patriots program.

Students have also created a veterans calendar.

Since the start of the roughly $1 million project, a number of ceremonies have been held to honor veterans and generate funding. Another campaign is in the works to honor all veterans who are recipients of medals from Medal of Honor to Purple Heart. Pavers will later be placed at the memorial for them. Pat Egert has more information on the campaign at 903-325-4495.

The Veterans Memorial covers the Red River Valley area of Lamar, Fannin, Delta, Red River and Choctaw counties. Learn more at www.rrvvm.com
