GREENVILLE - A life prison sentence was handed down Friday for Devin Eugene Royal in a Hunt County murder case from July 2011.

He had pleaded not guilty to the death of Javon Newman. The jury also denied claims by Royal that the murder was the result of immediate influence of sudden passion resulting from an adequate cause. Royal will spend at least 30 years in prison before he’s eligible for parole.

Witnesses to the shooting at a Greenville apartment complex identified Royal and Antonio Derrance Fletcher as suspects.

Fletcher is scheduled for trial next month. He’s also pleaded not guilty.
