SULPHUR SPRINGS - Crews have been feverishly working to finish final renovation details around the Sulphur Springs Square in time for this weekend’s 2012 Independence Day Celebration.

“Normally, we have about 3,000 people turn out for this event, but this year we expect twice that number,” said Sulphur Springs City Manager Marc Maxwell.

This event also marks more than two decades that the Sulphur Springs Symphony has sponsored a patriotic concert on the courthouse square.

The Northeast Texas Symphony Orchestra will perform at the Annual Independence Day Concert and Fireworks Show Saturday on the downtown square. This year, the group will play only patriotic music, which is fitting, given that the program will be preceded by the official unveiling and dedication of the Hopkins County Veterans Memorial.

The festivities, including hot dogs and cotton candy, begin at 4 p.m. with the dedication of the Hopkins County Veterans Memorialat 6:30 p.m. That’ll be followed by the concert at 7:30 p.m. and then a fireworks show.

“Hopefully, we can test the fountain and the lights tomorrow morning,” said Maxwell on Wednesday. “We encourage folks to come out early with their lawn chairs or blankets for a good seat.”
