Commissioner Atkins to Address Hunt County Budget

GREENVILLE - A Hunt County Commissioner, vocal in his opposition of the recently approved county budget, is hosting a town hall meeting this weekend.

Precinct 2 Commissioner Jay Atkins was the lone dissenting vote when the court last month approved the budget and tax rate. The item will lead to a two cent increase in the property tax rate to $.527 cents per $100 valuation. It'll help provide a pay raise for each full-time county employee of $1,040, but not elected officials. The approved budget also maintains the current level of county retirement and health benefits.

Atkins wrote on his Facebook page:

"Come out and tell me what is on your mind. As your commissioner I need this feedback to know what you expect our county government to do."

The commissioner even authored a guest column that appeared in Sunday’s Herald-Banner, further explaining his opposition to the items. His comments included this quote:

"The court has shown you its true colors and its lack of understanding of the issues facing us."

The session by Atkins is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Union Valley Fire Station.
