On the first day of the New Year the Delta County Sheriff’s Department to nabbed their first criminals.

On Jan. 1, 2013 a homeowner on FM 904 gave Delta County Constable Ben Snow a photo of a burglary suspect from a game camera coincidentally taken by the alleged suspect from a home invasion which occurred on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31.

Newly sworn in Delta County Sheriff Ricky Smith commended the cooperative efforts of Deputy Charla Anderson, Investigator Charles Herford, Constable Ben Snow and the Commerce Police Department in solving this crime.

Constable Snow advised the Commerce Police Department the homeowners identified the suspect from the Commerce area. Later that afternoon the Commerce Police Department stopped a vehicle with two people in the car, one of which was the suspect along with the jewelry taken from the Delta County residence.

Investigator Herford of the Delta County Sheriff’s Department conducted the interviews leading to the return of the jewelry with its owner and to a confession from the suspects. The suspects also admitted to taking a vehicle from the same residence and going “backroading,” which is a second felony offense for "Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle".

Sheriff Smith said the two suspects have been identified and the case has been referred District Attorney’s Office for prosecution. He added one of the primary objectives of the Delta County Sheriff’s Office is to protect the safety, welfare and property of the citizens of Delta County and to make the County a safe place to live.
