Friday's ice storm left hundreds of Northeast Texas residents without electricity. For those whose home relies on electricity for heat, the lack of power is more than a nuisance. With overnight low temperatures expected in the mid-teens, a couple of buildings in Northeast Texas have been opened to those seeking shelter from the cold.
In Commerce, the Emergency Management staff have opened First Baptist Church at 1401 Washington Street as a warming station from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m. Saturday, and then 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Sunday.
In Paris, which has been hit particularly hard by power outages, the American Red Cross has opened a warming and respite station or Lamar County at Lamar Avenue Church of Christ, located at 3535 Lamar Avenue. It will be open overnight.
In Cooper, the Delta County Civic Center has been opened as a public shelter. It was open during the day on Friday, but people needing shelter Friday night can get access by calling the Delta County Sheriff's Department (number posted on door).
Warming stations will be open to all. However, due to possibility of limited space, the needs of seniors and the medically sensitive will be prioritized.
