A surplus City of Greenville pickup truck will be restored into a memorial for one of the city’s former police officers.

The Greenville City Council Tuesday voted to accept an offer from Forrest Dickson to purchase the Ford F-150 pickup his father, David Dickson, used to drive.

The council voted 5-0 to approve the sale as part of the consent calendar during the regular session agenda.

Afterward Council member Holly Gotcher commended Dickson on his plans for the vehicle.

“I just want you to know your father truly did exemplify everything Greenville is, and hopes to become,” Gotcher said.

David Dickson was far more than the city’s first and only Litter Abatement Officer, as he was involved in many aspects of the community in Greenville and across Hunt County. Prior to his death in 2005, Dickson was also the chief of the Commerce Emergency Corps and a member of the agency’s dive team.

Dickson served as Litter Abatement Officer for seven years and he was honored by Keep Texas Beautiful n 2000 with a second place Ed Davis Litter Law Enforcement award, which recognizes law enforcement personnel who set examples in their communities.

Dickson was named as the Greenville Police Department Crime Prevention Officer shortly before his death and the annual David Dickson Memorial Fishing Friday is sponsored by the Greenville Police Department each year as part of the “Summer of Safety” program.
