Clean-Up Crew Initial Project Deemed Success
The Cooper Clean-Up Crew started with their first project on Saturday, February 25 with the help of 39 volunteers. Everyone convened on the Square in Cooper to fire up the power washers, cleaning curbs and sidewalks, raking leaves and pulling up weeds.
According to Cooper Clean-Up Crew organizer Carmen Chessher crews of volunteers worked from the Square extending out to clean up debris.
“Several truck and trailer loads of trash and limbs were hauled to the dump,” reported Carmen Chessher on their Facebook page. She credited Delta County Sheriff Ricky Smith and three of his inmates for mowing around the gazebo on the Square, helping with the cleaning of the curbs and were last spotted moving some old cars from a front yard. “I really appreciate everyone that helped. We had a great day and a lot of progress made in a very short time. I'm amazed by how much trash was gathered and sincerely hope that our continuous effort will encourage others to do their part. Awesome job everyone!”
“I was amazed at those who joined who don't live in Cooper but in Delta County,” commented Delta County Treasurer Bonnie Hobbs, as a City of Cooper resident and volunteer. “I saw several of the Garden Club members volunteering, and it made so proud of our little club. I love Delta County and want to see it shine again. We can do this and along the way, make new friends and share in the pride of our communities. Thank you everyone who came out today! I'm proud of us!”
The City of Cooper donated trash bags to help with the cleaning effort. In addition Chessher received a call from Texas A&M University-Commerce Athletic Department, and they want to participate with the Cooper Clean-Up Crew future projects.
The next Cooper Clean-Up Crew project will be on Saturday, March 18, 8 a.m. at the City Park on East Dallas Avenue to power wash picnic tables, pick up trash and limbs just in time for the Delta County Fair on Saturday, April 8. All volunteers are welcome to join the effort to clean up Cooper, Texas.
