State Sen. Bryan Hughes (R-Mineola) authored S.B. 7.

A state senate bill authored by Republican Bryan Hughes that would prevent teachers and corrections officers from using payroll deductions to pay union dues passed in Austin Tuesday evening.

Senate Bill 7 allows firefighters, police officers, emergency responders, and employees of charities to do just that. Hughes told the senate that state government should not be part of the union dues collection process for teachers and corrections officers.

Opponents, mainly Democrats, say the law is unduly discriminatory against teachers. SB 7 passed in the senate, 19-12.
