Kim Saenz, the director of the Hunt Regional Emergency Centers in Commerce and Quinlan, says the local emergency centers do see cases of opioid abuse.  She says it's important that opioid medications -- such as oxycodone or fentanyl -- not be prescribed for relatively minor pain trouble.  Kim says the state of Texas recently ordered that physicians check on online record of prescriptions a patient has previously received before prescribing an opioid medication.

John Mark Dempsey is the host of the public interest program The Blacklands Café from KETR News. Dempsey is also the play-by-play announcer for Commerce Tigers Football on 88.9 FM and on ketr.org.
