The Texas Animal Health Commission has confirmed a case of Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy or EHM, in a Lubbock County barrel racing horse. EHM is a neurologic disease linked to Equine Herpes Virus that can damage an animal’s tissue, brain, and spinal functions.
Animal health officials say the horse tested positives for the disease at a barrel racing event in Oklahoma City in April.
The TAHC says the horse has not traveled to other events. Nevertheless, officials have contained the horse and ranch while they monitor any other potential exposure to the disease.
