Cooper Independent School District will be making some dramatic safety changes when the bell rings on the first day of school this Fall. Cooper ISD Superintendent Denicia Hohenberger will be sending out a notice to parents and community on how the safety and well-being of the students and staff is of “utmost importance” to their school district.
With this being stated, the District will be participating in the “Guardian Plan” which allows for the arming of select staff member (s) on school grounds as one layer of protection.
She defines the system will utilize volunteers with identities being kept strictly confidential, no one will know who or how many are serving for maximum security, and these volunteers will be trained and must meet rigorous qualifications.
She urges the community to refrain from attempting to try to identify Guardian participants.
“We are fortunate and blessed that our district includes adequate volunteer(s) who are willing to serve,” said Cooper ISD Superintendent Denicia Hohenberger. “We hope and diligently pray there never becomes a need to utilize a layer of protection as afforded in the Guardian Plan.”
She is appreciative of the support of the Delta County Sheriff’s Department. They will also be starting a new school parking lot entry during school hours to create one monitored avenue for traffic. A map will be provided and explained before school begins.
As well as, beginning a new identification system for visitor entry – visitors will need to be prepared to show state issued identification card. This does not apply to open public events.
