State Highway 224 near Neylandville to be closed for months starting Friday

The Texas Department of Transportation is replacing the bridge over the South Sulphur River, with completion scheduled for January 2023.

  • If you regularly drive the old back route between Commerce and Greenville, you might want to take an alternate route, starting tomorrow. State Highway 224 is going to be closed at the South Sulphur River bridge starting Friday. That’s immediately northeast of Neylandville, just about halfway between Commerce and Greenville. The bridge over the South Sulphur is going to be demolished and replaced entirely. That stretch of State Highway 224 is going to closed for months. A statement from the Texas Department of Transportation says the project is scheduled to be finished by January 2023. The state has contracted with Sulphur Springs-based Highway 19 Construction for the project, valued at more than $2.6 million. Traffic along State Highway 224 will be routed onto detours during the duration of the project.
  • At Commerce High School today, the Commerce Independent School District will be hosting a back to school bash for Commerce ISD students and families. The event will include health and dental screenings, an immunization clinic, free haircuts and school supply assistance applications. The event is scheduled to run from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at Commerce High School.
  • Firefighters contained two wildfires in Northeast Texas yesterday. In Hunt County, a fire near FM 513 south of Lone Oak burned more than 11.5 acres before being contained around 11:30 p.m. last night. And in northern Rains County, crews extinguished a blaze northeast of Point around 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The fire near FM 514 burned about 15 acres. Fire danger remains high to very high across Northeast Texas today.
