KETR welcomes the holiday season with Reflections: Classic Jazz, Swing and Standards for the Night Before Thanksgiving tonight, from 7 p.m. until midnight. And on Thanksgiving Day, it's a trio of special programs from American Public Media: Turkey Confidential, Giving Thanks, and Every Good Thing.

Get in the holiday state of mind with the mid-century sounds of Reflections

Whether you’re cooking, cleaning, driving, or just taking it easy at home, the night before Thanksgiving has a holiday feel all its own. Every year, this station welcomes the holiday season with five hours of some of the hits and hidden gems of yesteryear. Host Mark Haslett’s Reflections: Classic Jazz, Swing and Standards for the Night Before Thanksgiving is a musical tour of the decades from the 1930s through the 1960s. It’s equal parts hepcat hip and cornball square, and all fun.

This year’s show features the music of Billie Holiday and Benny Goodman, including the latter’s collaborations with Teddy Wilson, Gene Krupa, and Lionel Hampton. The program also features selections from The Bill Evans Trio’s legendary 1961 performance at the Village Vanguard in New York City. Also in the mix, a few tunes from Ukrainian Soviet-era bandleader Leonid Utyosov. Throw in some Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington and Django Reinhardt, and it’s a Thanksgiving feast for the ears.

Thanksgiving Day features midday and evening specials on KETR

On Thursday at 11 a.m., KETR brings you a Thanksgiving favorite for years among public radio audiences, Turkey Confidential, the annual special produced by the award-winning culinary program The Splendid Table. Featured guests this year include Claire Saffitz, YouTube star and author of Dessert Person: Recipes and Guidance for Baking with Confidence: A Baking Book; Rick Martinez, co-host of the Borderline Salty podcast and author of Mi Cocina , Recipes and Rapture from My Kitchen in Mexico; and Jesse Sparks, host of The One Recipe and Senior Editor at Eater.

Then, Thursday at 1 p.m., it’s a celebration of the meaning of Thanksgiving with Giving Thanks from American Public Media, a thoughtful celebration of spirit of the holiday. Special guest Ada Limon, the new Poet Laureate of the United States, will read her poems and talk about how poetry amplifies gratitude. We’ll also revisit other U.S. Poets Laureate who have been guests on Giving Thanks, including Billy Collins, Rita Dove, and Ted Kooser.

Thanksgiving evening at 7 p.m., join Andrea Blain as she takes some time to give thanks and celebrate one of life's most meaningful gifts: music. It's Every Good Thing — an hour of stories and music to celebrate Thanksgiving, inspired by Blain’s many years in the classical music and arts communities of Blefast, Northern Ireland. KETR’s Thanksgiving specials lineup then concludes with a two-hour version of Giving Thanks, featuring music as well as the spoken word.

KETR wishes you and yours a safe and joyous Thanksgiving holiday weekend, and thanks you for your listenership and support.
