Rains ISD cancels Friday classes for gas line maintenance

UIL and extracurricular activities will happen as scheduled, district says.

  • In Rains County, classes at all Rains Independent School District campuses are cancelled today. District officials say the gas lines at all campuses are being tested and would be repaired if needed. Rains High School was closed yesterday for gas line work. Late Thursday afternoon, Rains ISD Superintendent Jennifer Johnson said all campuses would be closed on Friday. Workers from Atmos first arrived at Rains High School on Wednesday, after what seemed to be a gas smell promoted staff to call Atmos. School officials said no leak was found, but tests are ongoing. Rains ISD staff also said that UIL and extracurricular activities will be held today, despite the cancellation of classes.
  • Human skeletal remains recovered in Rains County Wednesday have been sent to an identification lab at the University of North Texas in Denton. On Thursday, the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that the remains have not been identified and discouraged speculation about the identity of the deceased. In Rains County Wednesday, law enforcement agencies received a report of the remains being found on a property in Rains County. An official release did not give details about the property or the location. On Wednesday, multiple law enforcement vehicles were observed along and near U.S. Highway 276 in western Rains County.
