- In Greenville, health officials have alerted the community that ground beef sold at the local La Michoacana grocery store last week could contain E. coli bacteria. A sample of the beef tested positive for the bacterium. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service says the batch in question was on sale at La Michoacana Nov. 28 through Dec. 1, which was Monday through Thursday of last week. No recall was issued because the beef was not on sale after Dec. 1. E. coli can cause an episode of food poisoning lasting about a week. Some people, particularly the very young and very old, could be vulnerable to kidney failure from the food-borne illness.
