NWS rules December Lamar County tornado an EF-2

The Blue Ridge-Leonard tornado was also an EF-2, while the Wolfe City tornado was classified an EF-1.

  • The tornado that struck Lamar County last week has been ruled an EF-2 by the National Weather Service. The agency determined that a total of 16 tornadoes touched down across Texas on Dec. 13. The tornado that hit western Lamar County was one of two EF-2 twisters to touch down in the KETR listening area. The tornado that struck northeastern Collin County and southwestern Fannin County was also ruled an EF-2. That tornado did major damage at Blue Ridge before also causing damage near Leonard. Elsewhere, an EF-1 tornado struck northern Hunt County and southern Fannin County during that same storm event. That tornado caused some damage around Leonard.
  • Across Northeast Texas today, partly sunny to mostly cloudy with highs near 50. Clear tonight, with lows in the mid 30s.
  • A cold front is forecast to move into Northeast Texas tomorrow. A wind chill watch will be in effect, as westerly winds are forecast to gust up to 45 MPH as the front blows into the region. Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 30s before starting to fall in the late morning on Thursday. Some areas could get a few snow flurries, with a light dusting of snow possible in northern Fannin and northern Lamar counties. By sunset, readings should be in the teens. Overnight Thursday, very cold and still breezy, with winds gusting to 35 MPH and lows in the single digits. Wind chill values Thursday night should dip into the negative single digits and perhaps lower.
