Candidates take advantage of Day 1 filing period

SULPHUR SPRINGS - More than a handful of local individuals were among the early candidates to file for the May general election on the first day of the filing period.

In Sulphur Springs, Craig Johnson and Clay Walker have filed for reelection in a bid to retain their seats for City Council Place 1 and City Council Place 2, respectively. Oscar Aguilar has also signed up for City Council Place 3. For the SSISD Board, Incumbents Jason Dietze and Don Sapaugh and challenger Leesa Toliver filed Monday.

In Greenville, Steve Reid has formally announced his intention to run for mayor to fill the expiring term of Tom Oliver. Cedric Green is also seeking the Place 6 seat, currently held by Betty Franklin.

Many local entities will be conducting elections this spring. Filing for the May 12 elections runs through March 5.
