Celeste police chief arrested on indecency charges

Texas Dept. of Public Safety / Texas Rangers

Celeste Chief of Police Roger Eugene Mueller III was arrested Friday on two counts of alleged indecency with a child by sexual contact.

The Hunt County grand jury returned sealed indictments in the case, according to District Attorney Noble D. Walker Jr.

“He was indicted today,” Walker said Friday evening, adding the case was investigated by the Texas Rangers. “The indictments were issued sealed and the warrants were served today. At last report he was still incarcerated.”

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Lonny Haschel confirmed Mueller was booked into the Hunt County Jail Friday.

Jail records indicate bond was set at $75,000 on each charge.

Neither Walker nor Haschel commented on the specific nature of the charges, as the indictments were not available for viewing Friday night and won’t be unsealed and made public until at least Monday.

The current Hunt County grand jury is serving indictments for consideration by the 354th District Court.

Once the indictments are unsealed, Judge Richard Beacom will assign a date for an arraignment hearing, at which time Mueller will enter a formal plea of guilty or not guilty to the charges and perhaps have an attorney appointed to represent him if he otherwise has not been able to obtain counsel.
