An unnatural canyon in Northeast Texas

Most Northeast Texas rivers meander through lush, dense vegetation. The North Sulphur is different.

After the river was channeled in the late 1920s, erosion began to widen and deepen the channel of the North Sulphur River. After decades, the cumulative effect is dramatic. The broad, dry riverbed looks more like something one would see in the Southwest instead of the South Central United States.

Mark Haslett served as KETR's News Director from February 2013 to June 2025. During his tenure the station's news operation enjoyed an increase in listener engagement and audience metrics, as well recognition in the Texas AP Broadcasters awards and a National Edward R. Murrow award.
