EDIT, July 17: The Greenville Herald-Banner reported late on July 16 that Piepenburg had been taken into custody Friday evening and that he's being held at the Hunt County Detention Center. No further details were immediately available.
As of late afternoon Friday, law enforcement officers continue to seek a Quinlan man who fled the scene of a dramatic high-speed chase through Hunt County Thursday morning.
The Greenville Herald Banner identified the suspect, David Anthony Piepenburg, as a Quinlan man, although the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office news release on the incident gave neither Piepenburg’s age nor city of residence.
Officials said around 9 a.m. Thursday, officers from the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies pursued Piepenburg after he failed to comply with an attempted stop on U.S. Hwy. 50, near Commerce. Driving a black Kia, unspecified model, Piepenburg led officers onto Interstate 30 and eventually abandoned the vehicle in central Greenville, in the 2600 block of I-30, a sheriff’s office news release said.
Piepenburg then ran through a wooded area and eventually stole another vehicle, this time a truck of an unspecified type with a trailer attached, officials said. Piepenburg led officers on a chase through Greenville, during which items falling from the trailer slowed traffic as officers pursued. Piepenburg eventually escaped. Law enforcement officers later found the truck and trailer abandoned near the intersection of Stanford Street and St. John Street, which is just northeast of the intersection of Wesley Street and Joe Ramsey Boulevard.
The initial stop attempt was because of Hunt County-issued arrest warrants citing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and harassment, the statement said.
During the incident, officers arrested a passenger in the Kia that chose to remain in the vehicle while Piepenburg left on foot, officials said. Officers arrested the person on charges of marijuana possession and identity fraud, they said.
Northeast Texas media organizations are using mugshots of Piepenburg published in connection with previous arrests.
Piepenburg remains at large. Officials cautioned the public not to approach Piepenburg, but to report him to the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office at 903-453-6838, or submit tips anonymously to Hunt County Crime Stoppers, 903-457-2929.
