Donna Tavener, longtime East Texas State women's sports coach and Northeast Texas educator, has died.

  • Northeast Texas educator and longtime East Texas State University women's sports coach Donna Tavener, has died. NAIA Coach of the Year in 1983, Tavener coached Lions volleyball and tennis 1977-83. Tavener later pursued a successful career as an educator in the Greenville and Commerce schools and at Texas A&M University-Commerce. First United Methodist Church of Commerce will hold a memorial service for Tavener at 2 p.m. Sun. Oct. 17.
  • Lamar County officials will dedicate a Texas State Historical Marker at the site of Jefferies Wagon Yard in downtown Paris on Sat. Oct. 23, during the city's Pumpkin Festival.
  • Hunt County sheriff's deputies recovered a backhoe reported stolen from Josephine and arrested a suspect in the theft.
