A&M-Commerce women's basketball (11-7; 5-3 in LSC) received recognition from the Lone Star Conference office on Tuesday, who confirmed that senior guard Ashlee Johnson's recent performance merited LSC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
In two wins against high-level opponents (Texas Woman's and Tarleton State) this week, Johnson contributed in several phases to help propel the Lions. The fourth-most prolific player in the LSC at generating steals was above her average on the week, pawing away seven over the course of two games for an average of 3.5 per game. In the win against Tarleton State last Saturday, the senior guard matched her career-high in rebounds at eight, while flirting with a triple double by adding 11 points and seven assists. Johnson even came through with a block, only the third one of her lengthy career. On the week, she helped A&M-Commerce hold opponents to just .341 shooting from the floor.
In addition to her top-billing in the steals department, Johnson is also a pivotal member of the Lions passing game, averaging the fourth-most assists in the conference with 3.8 per game. One of the most important pieces of head coach Jason Burton's scheme, Johnson finds herself on the court for extended stretches, averaging 31.9 minutes per game. That's good for the fifth highest in the conference.
Johnson and the rest of the Lions head to Lawton, Oklahoma to take on the Cameron Aggies (9-8; 6-2 in LSC).
