Anna Coyotes: 2013 football preview

txhshelmetproject.com

Anna High School football fans hope that six returning starters on offense and eight returners on defense can help the Coyotes break into the upper echelon of District 12-3A.

Last season, the Coyotes finished with a winning record (6-4), but missed the playoffs thanks to losing all their district matchups except for the Nevada Community game.

This year, Anna will be led on offense by senior lineman Austin Watkins. The first few weeks of the season will go a long way in determining how much talent the Coyotes have at the skill positions, but quarterback Ty Chapman (6-2, 170) gives the team a solid anchor in the offensive backfield.

The Anna defense might be strong enough to keep the ‘Yotes in games if the offense sputters in the early going. Up front, linemen Isaac Armijo, Jeremy Gee and Alan Segura will battle to control the line of scrimmage. The linebacker corps is led by seniors Sean Kyle (6-0, 190) and Korey Sanchez. Hunter Green,  Joseph Lopez and Darrien Hampton should see plenty of playing time in the defensive backfield.

The Coyotes face the three district teams that defeated them last year in the regular season’s final three weeks, so maintaining health into the home stretch of the schedule will be a concern.

Head coach: Jason Heath. 2012 record: 6-4, 1-3 in District 12-3A. Top players: OL Austin Watkins, Sr.; P/K Tyler Chapman, Sr.; LB Sean Kyle, Sr.; DL Alan Segura, Sr.; DB Hunter Green, Sr.; DL Jeremy Gee, Sr.; OL James Kemp, Jr.
