Murder trial to conclude

A Hunt County murder trial should conclude today.  A sentencing phase in the murder trial of Randall Douglas Smith of Caddo Mills is scheduled to conclude Monday.

Smith pleaded guilty Oct. 10 to one count of murder in connection with the September 2009 shooting death of Gregory Poteet, also of Caddo Mills. Prosecutors rested their case in the punishment hearing two days later.

Smith’s attorneys did not call any defense witnesses, but instead requested a pre-sentence investigation, which 354th District Court Judge Richard A. Beacom granted. Smith was required to give his version of events as part of the investigation.

The results of the investigation are to be presented during the sentencing hearing this afternoon.  An autopsy report indicated Poteet died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds- two to the left rear shoulder and back and two to the back of the head.  The wounds were caused by a .38 caliber pistol at close range.
