Heavy rainfall on Thursday caused flash flooding across Northeast Texas with some areas seeing over 6" of rainfall.
Emergency responders closed off multiple roads across Hunt County including Charity road and Culver street in Commerce, and also Hwy 69 north of Greenville.
At least one high water rescue was reported around 1:35 on County Road 4509 North of Commerce when a utility van attempted to drive across a roadway covered in water. The van was swept from the road in the rapidly rising flood. No injuries were reported. At least three homes were also reported to have flood waters entering them, no reports yet of how much damage was sustained.
Greenville Middle School sustained flood damage after the auditorium filled with water during Thursday morning's flood, and Quinlan Ford High school's cafeteria ceiling collapsed during the early afternoon sending gushing rain water onto students below. No injuries have been reported, but events being held at Ford High School have been canceled or rescheduled.
With the storms that blew through came frequent cloud to ground lightning. Due to a major power outage in the southeastern portion of Commerce, Commerce ISD officials told parents that they could come pick up their children from Commerce Elementary School and A.C. Williams Elementary. Students were safe inside the building, but had no power.
The severe weather exited the region in the early afternoon after dropping nearly 6" of rain in some areas.
