Family of Curtis Gray seeking justice in murder investigation

Brad Kellar

Family members and friends of Curtis Wayne “Topper” Gray Sr. gathered Thursday morning to make it clear they intend to seek answers in connection with the investigation into Gray’s death.

“This family loved him and they will seek justice for him and that’s the bottom line,” said Gray’s brother Louis, during a press conference on the steps of the Hunt County Courthouse, organized by the Greenville Branch of the NAACP.

A vigil was conducted Thursday night in front of the residence where Curtis Gray was shot and killed late last month.

Greenville attorney Royal Lynn Mullins has been charged with one count of murder in connection with Gray’s death.

Curtis Gray Jr. was among the family members expressing their frustration with the case.

“It was clear cut,” he said. “He walked into my dad’s house and shot him.”

NAACP Greenville Branch President Monica Fisher said the conference was conducted to help bring about public awareness of the crime and to make sure Mullins does not receive special treatment. Fisher also called upon anyone with information about the case to contact the Greenville Police Department.

“All witnesses please come forward so that justice can be served,” she said.

Reverend Ronald W. Wright, executive director with Justice Seekers of Texas, said the organization planned to conduct its own investigation, as well as additional press conferences, concerning the case. Wright also questioned what he believed was a relatively low bond for Mullins.
