In Sulphur Springs, the local police chief has been placed on administrative leave because he’s being investigated by a state agency.

Tyler-based KLTV-TV has reported that Sulphur Springs Public Safety Director James W. “Jay” Sanders has been placed on leave with pay pending completion of an investigation of his conduct by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. TCOLE officials told KLTV that they would not specify the nature of the investigation while the investigation remained ongoing.

A special meeting of the Sulphur Springs City Council was held on the evening of March 25, presumably to address the situation, although the Sulphur Springs News-Telegram reported that the council did not issue any statements regarding the details of the closed session.

City officials did tell the News-Telegram on Monday that Sanders was placed on leave due to his connection with “an ongoing criminal investigation by another agency.”

During Sanders’ absence, some of his duties will be performed by either Sulphur Springs Police Capt. Jason Ricketson or Sulphur Springs Fire Department Assistant Chief Tim Vaughn, the News-Telegram said.
