LaVelle Hendricks reflects on the upcoming Juneteenth holiday, with observances Saturday in Greenville, Sulphur Springs and Paris. Each city is hosting a parade or other celebration beginning at 11 a.m. LaVelle is pastor of the New Caney Baptist Church and Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Commerce. In his capacity as professor of counseling at Texas A&M-Commerce, Dr. Hendricks comments on the 50th anniversary of the "War on Drugs," which an ACLU survey says is now seen as a failure by a large majority of Americans. But he does not believe posession and sale of addictive drugs should be decriminalized, and favors more treatment programs.
