Hunt County residents present concerns about Farmersville annexation

The land adjacent to the Northeast Texas Trail could become a designated Municipal Development District, pending results of the May 6 election.

At this week’s regular meeting of the Hunt County Commissioners Court, residents from northwestern Hunt County voiced concerns about the City of Farmersville annexing land in Hunt County. Recently, Farmersville officials approved the annexation of a section of the Northeast Texas Trail running northeast of Farmersville. The annexation crosses the Collin County-Hunt County line and extends near the communities of Celeste, Merit, Floyd and Wagner. Farmersville has an extraterritorial jurisdiction extending for a mile on either side of the trail.

Furthermore, the City of Farmersville has presented a ballot measure on whether to create what’s called a Municipal Development District in the newly annexed area. That would impose a one-half-cent sales tax in the district. Farmersville voters will decide on the matter in this spring’s elections on Saturday, May 6. Hunt County voters in the affected area must drive to Collin County to vote in the election. The Greenville Herald Banner reports some Hunt County residents say they tried to vote early and were told they were ineligible for early voting.

Hunt County commissioners told the public Tuesday that they’re investigating the matter and will address it again in the next regular meeting on May 9. Early voting in the spring elections continues through May 2 at several locations, including the Collin College Farmersville campus in the Atrium.
