New media and soccer, L.A. style

FC Dallas is hosting Chivas USA on July 4 in Frisco. Here's a look at the 21st-century fan culture of Los Angeles' "other" soccer team.

KETR spoke with John Sandate, ak.a. "East L.A. Chiva," co-host of a podcast dedicated to Chivas USA, one of two Major League Soccer teams in Los Angeles. In English, "Chivas" translates as "Goats," so for that reason and others, the podcast is called What The Flock?!

The podcast is over a year old, with a loyal following among Los Angeleno and Major League Soccer circles. So for the benefit of those curious about creating their own podcast, "ELAC" shares his experiences as a start-up host and producer.

There's a wealth of related topics - the unique phenomenon of the soccer "supporters group," the inclusive culture of Chivas' Black Army supporters and the strange case of the Chivas USA franchise - a club with an odd and often problematic relationship with its sister (parent?) club, Chivas de Guadalajara, one of the most beloved (and sometimes loathed) soccer teams in Latin America.
