A federal judge ruled Wednesday that Gov. Greg Abbott’s executive order prohibiting mask mandates in schools violates the Americans with Disabilities Act.

  • The Texas Tribune reports the ruling comes after a long legal struggle involving parents, a disability rights organization and Texas public officials over whether the ban on mask mandates in schools was in violation of the violating the 1990 federal Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Civil rights groups protested that many students and others with disabilities at increased risk for communicable diseases. The U.S. District Judge ruling on the case said the ban impedes children with disabilities from the benefits of public schools’ programs, services and activities.
