Crews start remediation on Superfund site

By Brad Kellar

Greenville – There will be one less contaminated site in Hunt County within a few months, as the final cleanup of the former ESCO Manufacturing Site in the Ardis Heights area of Greenville has begun.

The remediation of the Superfund site began this week, as crews started dismantling of the building, and excavating the soil surrounding the structure. The project is expected to last through September.

In 2008, the Environmental Protection Agency announced there would add the ESCO facility, as well as dozens of nearby locations, to the Superfund list.

ESCO manufactured electrical transformers and related equipment at the site between 1945 and 1991. Tests on the soil at the old plant location indicated the ground is contaminated with PCB and lead.
