The relentless fight against cancer and support of groups like the American Cancer Societycontinues to leave a large impact.

Participants of this month’s Lamar County Relay for Lifehelped bring in more than $50,000, bringing the total for Northeast Texans to well over $100,000 in donations so far in 2012.

Other known figures include $31,000 from the May event at Texas A&M University-Commerce. Also that month, the Hopkins County Relay for Life event brought in over $66,000 and helped the organization earn the distinction of a $1 million Relay thanks to its strong showing through the years.

Relay for Life helps communities across the globe celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.

Citizens are coming together in other ways to help victims of cancer. Last month, dozens gathered in Commerce to support the family of Alyssa Daggs. The family’s expenses have swelled amid the cost of treatment for their 3-year-old daughter, who is battling lymphoblastic leukemia.
