An announcement could come soon that a new public works director has been hired for the City of Greenville.

City of Greenville Public Relations Liaison Autumn Barton said Friday that the city has extended an offer for the Director of Public Works position and is awaiting confirmation from the individual. Barton said the city will send a news release when there is an acceptance and a start date for the winning candidate. The city began advertising the position in March.

The city’s current budget was balanced through multiple cuts in personnel and programs, and left  Massoud Ebrahim serving as both the Greenville City Manager and his former position as director of public works.

Ebrahim was appointed by the city council in May 2013 as the interim city manager for the City of Greenville, in the wake of the council terminating former city manager Steven Alexander’s contract.

Ebrahim was awarded the permanent post in August of last year, while also continuing to perform the duties as director of public works due to budget considerations.

In order to save half of the expected salary of a public works director, Ebrahim said he would consider hiring a full time director early this year.

Ebrahim said the preferred qualifications for the individual winning the position would cover several pages.

“We are looking for a professional engineer with experience, like me basically,” Ebrahim said.
