Carol says because of a lack of transportation in the form of railroads or any kind of roads, it was almost impossible to ship crops to market, whereas cows and horses could be driven to market on foot and also had great value in the immediate area. Sheep were much more common in early Northeast Texas than most people believe. Also, many people successfully rounded up wild horses and bred them with donkeys to produce mules.
