Texas A&M-Commerce associate professor of counseling Dr. LaVelle Hendricks says he's participating in the planning for a program to promote civility at the University, at the behest of A&M-Commerce president Dr. Mark Rudin. Dr. Hendricks is also planning an event for Saturday, August 31 to promote good relations between the Commerce Police and students

Dr. LaVelle Hendricks, associate professor of counseling at Texas A&M-Commerce and a member of the Commerce school board, is leading "Operation Sweet Treats" December 17-22 in Commerce.  Dr. Hendricks and other community leaders will be riding with Commerce police and handing out candy to children and teens they encounter on the street, in order to show them that the police are their friends and are not to be feared.

A 31 year old Commerce resident faces charges of Possession or Promotion of Child Pornography.

About 3 weeks ago, the Commerce Criminal Investigations Division received information from the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office, about an individual in the City of Commerce downloading and distributing child pornography.  The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office has been working in conjunction with the ICAC (Internet crimes against children) Task Force and the Commerce Police Department on these types of cases.

The suspect in Wednesday afternoon's drug bust in Commerce has been arraigned and identified as 24 year-old Treyvon Deair Hicks.

Hicks has been charged with manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance of more than 4 grams but less than 200 grams in a drug-free zone. Judge Sheila Linden has set bond for the first-degree felony offense at $150,000.

Hicks was also arrested in 2013, 2012 and 2010 on assault charges, trespassing charges and interfering with a 911 call.

A search warrant was executed by the Commerce/University joint SWAT with the aid of Hopkins County/Sulphur Springs SWAT Wednesday afternoon.

A Commerce man led officers in an extensive chase through Commerce, Texas A&M University-Commerce Campus, Hunt County roads and Greenville.
