Steve Killian, superintendent of the Cooper Lake State Park, says the parks is now offering kayaks for rental to be used in exploring the lake.  They're available at park headquarters.  Also, the park is once again open for full occupancy.  Also, the park has some part-time and summer jobs available, including a park ecucator's position.

Steve Killian, superintendent of Cooper Lake State Park, says he expects large numbers of visitors during spring break, the weeks of March 8 and March 15.  He says it necessary to make reservations for overnight stays.  Steve says the park has recently become an official Texas Parks and Wildlife weighing station for record-setting fish.  And Steve says the park will be opening its equestrian trails for mountains biking.

Steve Killian, superintendent of the Cooper Lake State Park, says a pond at the South Sulphur Unit of the park has been stocked with trout.  "Kid Trout Fishing" will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday (February 6), and starting Sunday, trout fishing will be available to everyone.  Also, Steve says the park will be hiring part-time summer employees soon, including a college intern.

Steve Killian, superintendent of Cooper Lake State Park, says the South Sulphur and Doctors Creek units will be closed this weekend for a youth deer-hunting event.  Both units of the park are now offering self-guided hiking tours, with maps provided at the park headquarters.

Steve Killian, the superintendent of Cooper Lake State Park, says the park will hold its annual "Winter Wonderland" Christmas lights celebration on Friday and Saturday night (December 18-29) at the Doctors Creek unit of the park.  The park will be filled with campers and they will decorate their cabins and trailers with holiday lights.

Steve Killian, superintendent of Cooper Lake State Park, says the park is seeking designation as a "dark sky" park whene the night skies are dark enough to see much of the Milky Way galaxy.  He says the park has installed new, less glaring parking lot lights to improve the dark-sky effect and make stars even more visible at night.

Steve Killian, superintendent of Cooper Lake State Park, says the park is making plans to extend the trails in the South Sulphur Unit by about 10 miles, by connecting existing trails.  The park could use volunteers to help building the trails, he says.  The park continues to see an increase of 20 percent or more in attendance, Steve Says, and the park's 14 cabins are booked about a month in advance.

Steve Killian, superintendent of Cooper Lake State Park, says admissions at the Doctor's Creek unit of the park was up 50 percent in August compared to last year, and the South Sulphur unit was up 30 percent.  Cooper Lake was 10th in admissions for all state parks in June.  Steve says the park has recently had some controlled burns of several hundred acres that are necessary for the park's ecosystem.

Steve Killian, superintendent of Cooper Lake State Park, says attendance is up this summer at the park compared to last year, despite ... or perhaps, because of ... the coronavirus situation.  In fact, Cooper Lake is among the top 10 state parks in attendance this summer. Steve says the park has various ways of helping families enjoy the park even though the organized programs led by park rangers are not taking place for the time being.

Steve Killian, superintendent of Cooper Lake State Park, says a fisherman recently. set a new rod-and-reelrecord for the lake by catching a 55.33 pound flathead catfish. Steve says fishing at the lake has been good in general lately.   Texas Parks and Wildlife warns that drownings are up 30% this year, and Steve offers tips on safe swimming.

Steve Killian, superintendent of Cooper Lake State Park, says the park is now taking reservations for new overnigh- camping visits.  When the park opened again to camping, only campers with existing reservations were being allowed.  It is still recommended that you make camping and day-use reservations online.  Also, Steve says the Lone Pine Boat Ramp at the Doctor's Creek unit is open again after repairs.

Steve Killian, superintendent of the Cooper Lake State Park, says the park with benefit from the recent passage of Proposition 5 among the state constitutional amendments, along with other state parks.  It will direct funds from sales taxes on sporting goods to the parks.  Steve says it may allow a heavily damaged pier at Cooper Lake State Park to finally be repaired years after it was nearly destroyed.

Doctors Creek Unit just celebrated 20 years of service to this area and Delta County. On Jan. 3, 1996 Doctors Creek Unit of Cooper Lake State Park opened. The Cooper Lake Project was authorized in 1955 and construction began in 1986, according to the history sited.

Last Thursday while fishing on Cooper Lake, Sulphur Bluff brothers – Justin and Jaden Goldsmith – discovered a capsized boat with two Arkansas men clinging to it.

According to Kody Waters, Park Superintendent of Cooper Lake State Park, the young men said they were out fishing around 6:30 p.m. when they located Neil Bruton, 59, and Kenneth Long, 59, both of Prairie Grove, Arkansas hanging on to their 14-foot V-bottom boat which had capsized around noon due to high winds.

Jim Beach of Cooper Lake State Park says Saturdays are full of activities at the park, including instructional programs in campfire building, astronomy, fishing, canoeing and others.  The park is about 15 miles east of Commerce, just off State Highway 19.
