Candidates Set For May 7 Election; Will Voters Turn Out?

City of Commerce
City of Commerce

Commerce businessman Derek Price, owner of Greenshoot Media, hopes a full slate of candidates brings more people out to vote in the city's municipal election on Saturday, May 7.  Many other Texas cities also have elections on that day.  Price laments that only 172 people voted in last year's Commerce municipal election.  Candidates in this year's election are John Sands and Wyman Williams for mayor; Becky Thompson for City Council, Place 2; and Gene Lockhart, Emma Martin, David McKenna and Teresa Miller for City Council, Place 4.  Three charter amendments also will be on the ballot.

John Mark Dempsey is the host of the public interest program The Blacklands Café from KETR News. Dempsey is also the play-by-play announcer for Commerce Tigers Football on 88.9 FM and on ketr.org.
