Rick Parent, director of the fledgling Tipitina's Arts Co-op in Commerce, says he recently attended a music-industry convention in California and received about $300,000 in donations of musical instruments and other equipment. Parent's four-decade career in the music industry apparently paid off in a major way. The facility, located in the old A.L. Day Elementary School building in east Commerce, is awaiting a certificate of occupancy from the city of Commerce. It will be funded by the Tipitina's Foundation of New Orleans.
