Thomason Fills Council Position, Foster Takes Oath

It was his first time to preside over a Cooper City Council Meeting, one of his first actions new Mayor Darren Braddy swore Donna Thomason back onto position. After accepting the resignation of JoAnn Preas, Thomason was appointed to the unexpired term before a full council.

In a previous meeting newly elected councilman Allen Foster was sworn into office alongside the new Mayor Darren Braddy.

In other council news, Delta County Sheriff Ricky Smith and Chief Deputy Charla Singleton presented a request to pursue the construction of a firing range for the Delta County Sheriff’s Department behind the Big Creek Lake dam.

“It is important for our officers to be able to handle a weapon,” said Sheriff Ricky Smith.

The Council unanimously agreed if Attorney Jay Garrett, who wasn’t present, could establish an agreement and clarify liability issues before continuing.

The zoning request of residential to light commercial by Carmen Chessher for Gaylon Maddox’s The Tasting Station location at 151 E. Waco Street in Cooper was allowed a variance as reported by Head of Zoning Commission James Jarrell for a two-year period or while it is function – at any point it is no longer in operation the property will revert to previous zoning.

“This really brought this house back to life,” said Councilman Bear Wilkins on Chessher’s improvements to the blue structure in the neighborhood of Delta Supermarket and the Post Office.

The Texas Municipal League IEBP rerate was discussed which is necessary to put to a vote to prevent any lapse in City employees’ insurance.   The #4 option despite the increase was accepted in a 5-0 vote.

The City of Cooper Council will meet again on Monday, July 10, 2017 at 5 p.m.
