Hunt County Master Gardener Byron Chitwood says the best varieties of tomatoes for Northeast Texas are Celebrities and Romas.  He says pests can be managed by spraying plants with water mixed with Dawn dish washing detergent, a couple of tablespoons per gallon.  Or you can plant basil and garlic near your tomato plants to keep away insects.

John Mark Dempsey is the host of the public interest program The Blacklands Café from KETR News. Dempsey is also the play-by-play announcer for Commerce Tigers Football on 88.9 FM and on ketr.org.
