Join us on July 3rd to Celebrate America!The Paris Municipal Band will play patriotic music at the Love Civic Center Pavilion starting at 7pm.Fireworks are anticipated to start at 9:15pm.It’s all happening at the Love Civic Center, located at 2025 South Collegiate Drive in Paris.

Bread of Life Food Pantry distributes free food to those in need. Family and Senior Commodity Boxes available at all distributions. Located at 301 Hwy 224, Commerce, TX. Most boxes consist of canned vegetables, rice, pasta, peanut butter, cereal, juice, and canned meat. We also offer frozen meat, bread and fresh produce when in stock. New clients bring a photo ID and proof of address. For example, current utility bill. Our distribution days are the first Friday after the first Wednesday 10:00am – 2:00pm for seniors 60 plus, and everyone younger from 12:00pm – 2:00pm and on the 3rd Wed of the month from 5:00pm – 8:00pm. We also offer Emergency Boxes to families who can’t wait for a distribution day. Volunteers and donations are always welcome. Thank you. The City of Winnsboro presents an Independence Day Fireworks Show on Friday. Food trucks and vendors will be on-site starting at 5 p.m., with fireworks starting around 9 p.m. It’s all happening at Pleasure Point Park, located at County Road 4860 in Winnsboro.

Dr. Deborah L. Burkett is a retired educator, author and former site visitor for the American Medical Association, a graduate of Sam Houston State University, the University of Alaska and also has a doctorate in education from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.As a member of the Cherokee County Historical Commission, Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Burkett’s roots are deep in the state. Her ancestor, Mary Moore Dickson Long, traveled by covered wagon from Tennessee to the Republic of Texas in 1836. Initially Mary stayed with her cousin, James P. Henderson, who became the first governor of the State of Texas.Books by Burkett include: 1) Quilts and Their Stories Binding Generations Together (2010). 2) East Texas Piney Woods Spunky Women 1830s-1950s (2016). 3) Remembering Those Buried Beneath the Cedars (2020). 4) From the Alamo to Present Day, Texans Speak (2024) Burkett’s presentation will include stories from her recent book while highlighting individuals with connections to Mt. Vernon. She will also discuss the importance of oral history interviews. At this quarterly meeting the Audie Murphy World War Two history chapter will hear a program given by Margaret Kincannon about operations in China during the war. This includes the story of General Claire Chennault, native of Commerce, Texas, and events from India across the mountains into China, and subsequent attacks on Japanese facilities. The evening is free, and all are invited.
